When you think of destination weddings, where is one of the first places that springs to mind? Probably Spain or a Greek Island.
Well, it turns out that Santorini is currently the destination choice for couples, so you’d have been right.
The reason is obvious; that view! The island is tiny and the West coast (from which you can see the East side of the island) has some of the most beautiful coastal views … anywhere! Santorini Gem, where they had chosen to be married, takes pride of place.
Santorini has been capitalising on this and inviting couples to tie the knot while having some of the most amazing wedding photographs available; the ocean, beautiful tiny islands in the distance, a fresh breeze, warm sunshine and a cliff edge. It’s such a unique option for those with wanderlust in their hearts!
Carla and Lee decided to leave the grey skies of England behind in favour of a Santorini wedding. They contacted me about joining them as photographer; suffice to say I was overjoyed since it was an Island I’d wanted to visit for years.
So what does a Santorini wedding look like?
Wedding photography style
My style of wedding photography is relaxed, informal, fun and full of passion and life. I combine humour, poignant moments, beauty and a truly documentary approach which is popular with the UK market.
Couples and their guests can truly relax in my company and often say they forget that I’m there. That’s my goal at every wedding.
Their wedding in Santorini…
The day begins
Carla and her bridesmaids and bridemale were at the Majestic hotel only a few miles from Santorini Gem and the Pension Kavallarias where the boys were getting ready ..
.. although to be honest, everywhere is only a few miles away in Santorini!
After spending some time with the girls and capturing the fun of the wedding preparation and photographing the incredible wedding dress which Carla had had handmade, I made my way over to see the guys and their families. The sun was really beating down by this time, but they still looked cool with their sunglasses…
At Santorini Gem
I’d been to recce the venue with Carla and Lee a few days earlier, but the guests hadn’t seen it. As they walked in, they were as blown away as everyone is on experiencing the setting.
It really seems like a set from a Hollywood romantic blockbuster!
Carla arrived not long after and she and her bridesmaids/male made their way down the path to Lee … who shed a few tears as he saw her for the first time. She looked radiant and they shared an emotional first moment with each other in front of the ocean.
The ceremony was chock full of feelings and love; you could see it in their eyes. They made promises, exchanged rings and shared a first kiss as man and wife.
After congratulations and a few champagnes, it was time for a few portraits of them as man and wife using the incredible background on offer.
They were so happy, which shines through in the photos. The view was incredible as the sun was starting to set.
Now it’s time for fun!
They entered the wedding breakfast glass room hand in hand to the applause of their guests and chatted happily with everyone who had made the effort to join them abroad. There were so many smiles, so much fun and so much laughter; a perfect wedding in the sun.
After food, the speeches started. They were a tearful bunch, which from a wedding photography perspective is great since you can capture the obvious emotions which they felt for each other. The best man had organised a game of family fortunes where they had to answer slightly embarrassing questions – it’s the first time I’ve seen this and it was hilarious!
Dance the night away
No wedding would be complete without a first dance and as the sun set over the horizon, they took their places surrounded by their friends and family, who soon joined them. I took the opportunity to take some beautiful photographs of them with the Santorini nightscape in the background.
I could tell how much these moments mattered to them as a couple and it was a pleasure to join them for their wedding in Santorini. Congratulations guys!!
Advice for couples planning a Santorini wedding
If you’re planning your own destination wedding on this Greek Island, here are a few tips for you:
Employ an experienced wedding planner, either from the UK or on Santorini. It’s difficult to do everything from home yourself.
Have a late wedding – maybe 5pm. It’s simply too hot earlier in the day.
Bear in mind, as it’s hot, you might want to considering your clothing carefully.
Make sure everyone gets there a couple of days before the wedding ideally, in case of flight delays.
Ensure that the most important people are willing and able to travel with you to your destination.
Take your own photographer … but then I’m biased right? I love to photograph destination weddings, so feel free to get in touch for a price!
